Microsoft  will release the next version of Lync, a business communications platform, branded as Skype for Business.

The release is scheduled for the first half of 2015 and will include a new client interface, a new server version, and close integration with Office 365.

An introductory video released by Microsoft highlights the features of the new version.

Office 365 subscribers will receive the updated version automatically, but customers using Lync on premises will need to arrange for an upgrade.

Microsoft have stated that the new release will combine the feature set and security of the Lync platform with the simplicity and familiar interface of the Skype application, used by hundreds of millions of people globally.

A key change for users of Lync will be video calling, adding a popular inter-office calling option that many Lync customers have been seeking for some time.
